Making AI Systems
Operationally Trustworthy.
Dynamic Frontier is an AI safety company built by someone who's been in the room when production AI running at scale fails — and knows what it takes to fix it. We build the tools and conduct the research that help organizations trust the AI they deploy.
Where This Started
Dynamic Frontier didn't start with a pitch deck or a market thesis. It started with a patient reporting chest pain to a chatbot that didn't care.
Dynamic Frontier's first client was a telehealth startup doing roughly a million dollars a day in gross revenue — all organic growth, no investment capital. The company engaged DF to address critical AI safety failures in their systems, and what David found in the first week became the foundation for everything we've built since.
The startup had a contractual obligation to screen for medication side effects during every patient interaction — over 100 categorized side effects with specific escalation protocols for severe symptoms. Their AI cancellation agent ignored all of it. A patient could report chest pain three times, and the bot would just process the refund. No escalation. No API call. No follow-up.
David identified the failure and built the fix: a RAG-powered guardrail system that tokenized the partner's side-effect rubric into a vector database and cross-referenced every conversation in real time. Severe side effect? Immediate ER escalation. Non-severe? Route to a follow-up appointment. The AI finally did what it was legally and ethically obligated to do.
That work led to a full-time role as Software Engineering Manager, where David led a 17-member distributed engineering team through a clean-room rebuild of the company's entire platform — no legacy code carried over. The existing system was completely re-written from requirements, not from the old codebase, to ensure HIPAA compliance couldn't be compromised by inherited technical debt. The rebuilt platform ran on modern mobile and web applications with a serverless Google Cloud backend and achieved HITRUST certification.
From there, David took on the role of AI Program Manager, leading every AI initiative across the organization. He architected and brought to production a HIPAA-compliant, agentic virtual nutritionist using LangChain and retrieval-augmented generation — a system that contributed to a 38% improvement in user weight-loss outcomes. He authored the company's first AI Governance Policy and formed a cross-functional AI Governance Committee to define risk controls, usage standards, and compliance guardrails for generative AI adoption company-wide. He worked directly with Google engineers to migrate AI workloads from OpenAI to Vertex AI, ensuring HIPAA compliance and secure operation within GCP.
Every step of that journey reinforced the same lesson: AI safety and governance aren't features you bolt on at the end. They're operational disciplines that need dedicated infrastructure from day one. Dynamic Frontier exists to build that infrastructure.
About the Founder
David Max brings an unusual combination of skills to AI safety.
He has over 10 years of software engineering experience and more than 4 years leading engineering teams and AI programs at the management level. He's built HIPAA-compliant AI systems in production, authored enterprise AI governance policies, and worked directly with cloud platform partners on compliant AI infrastructure.
But his background extends beyond engineering. David holds a BS in Communication from San Diego State University — the #5 Communication program in the nation at the time — where he did graduate-level coursework on Robert Cialdini's seminal research on Persuasion. He competed in speech and debate and went on to become a national-level judge.
That Communication foundation is more relevant to AI safety than you might think. Understanding how influence, compliance, and authority work at a fundamental level — the same dynamics Cialdini documented in human-to-human interaction — provides a unique lens on how AI systems can be manipulated into unsafe behavior. It's the foundation of Dynamic Frontier's AI Persuasion Dynamics (AIPD) research program, which applies the science of persuasion to AI safety testing in ways that purely technical approaches miss.
David is known for detailed, thorough communication — his colleagues call his emails “novelas.” That same rigor shows up in how Dynamic Frontier approaches AI safety: no shortcuts, no hand-waving, no generic checklists. Every analysis is grounded in the specifics of how your system actually works and the ways it could actually fail.
An AI-First Company, By Design
Dynamic Frontier practices what it preaches.
This is a one-person company augmented by AI. David works alongside a team of specialized AI agents — for strategic planning, product development, research, code generation, and content creation. This isn't a limitation to be embarrassed about. It's a deliberate operating model that proves the thesis Dynamic Frontier is built on: AI can be a reliable, productive partner in high-stakes work — if you build the right safety and governance infrastructure around it.
Every tool, framework, and process we use internally is subject to the same scrutiny we bring to our clients' AI systems. When we say AI can be operationally trustworthy, we mean it — because we depend on that being true every day.
This approach also means we stay lean and move fast without compromising quality. No bloated team, no coordination overhead, no layers of management between the person who understands your problem and the person who builds the solution. When you work with Dynamic Frontier, you work with someone who has hands-on expertise in every layer of the stack — from the research that informs our detection capabilities to the engineering that implements them.
Our Principles
AI behavior is the real surface area.
Tokens, latency, and cost matter — but what your AI does is what determines whether it helps or harms. That's what we focus on.
No silent failures. Ever.
If your AI violates a policy, misses an escalation, or drifts from its intended behavior, someone should know immediately — not two weeks later when a customer complains.
Safety must be automated — humans should only approve.
Manual log review doesn't scale. The detection, analysis, and recommendation should be automated. The human's job is to make the final call, not to find the problem.
The product should feel like a seatbelt.
Invisible when things are fine. Indispensable when they're not. Safe should make AI governance feel like a natural part of your workflow, not a burden layered on top of it.
Research drives everything.
Our detection capabilities aren't static rule sets. They're grounded in original research into how AI systems actually fail — and they get smarter as that research expands.
We Don't Just Build Tools. We Solve Problems.
Dynamic Frontier offers hands-on AI safety consulting and bespoke development services alongside our automated scanning platform. For many organizations, the fastest path to trustworthy AI isn't a self-serve tool — it's working directly with someone who's built HIPAA-compliant AI systems in production, authored governance policies, and led engineering teams through complex compliance challenges.
AI Safety Audit
A structured engagement where we analyze your AI systems and deliver a comprehensive safety, alignment, and compliance report with a prioritized remediation plan. You provide your logs and prompts. We run Safe's automated analysis plus expert review and deliver findings with specific fixes your team can execute. No access to your production systems required.
Bespoke AI Development
Need AI built right from the start? We design and build AI solutions with safety, alignment, and compliance baked in from day one — not bolted on after the fact. Whether you're deploying your first AI system or hardening an existing one, we bring the same rigor that earned HITRUST certification and a 38% improvement in patient outcomes at our first client.
Ongoing Retainer
Monthly re-scans, priority support, and continuous monitoring of your AI systems as they evolve. Prompt changes, model updates, and new features all introduce risk — a retainer ensures nothing slips through the cracks.
“You can only ship AI at scale if you trust it.”
Whether you need automated safety scanning, a hands-on AI safety audit, bespoke AI development with compliance built in, or just want to see what Safe finds in your system — we're here to help.
